I sat up, stretching out my arms and back as I dug through my covers in search of my hoodie. The rustling woke up my mom, who was sleeping soundly right next to me on our brand new, twin sized mattress. Last December, a little while before my seventh birthday, the nice people in fancy clothes decided that everyone could get some money for important things like food and a home. That’s the day mom and I moved from our oak tree to our room, and the first time I ever saw my mom smile with her teeth.

“Baby, can you hear me?”

I realized that mom was trying to talk to me. I turned to her, smiling, and said good morning. She softly touched my cheek with her hand, which felt nice and warm thanks to the blankets. My classroom has some pretty, light green curtains with flowers, and they’re used to block out light from outside. Our room doesn’t have any yet, so I think I would’ve woken up even if the sirens weren’t so loud. I hopped off the mattress and slid inside my hoodie, and then I went to the sink and sang happy birthday 4 times as I brushed my teeth. I turned back towards the mattress to find my mom braiding her hair and putting on a pretty shirt. The clock on the floor started beeping, which meant it was 8:30. We finished getting ready, and then mom took my hand and unlocked then opened the door to the street sirens were passing only 10 or so minutes before. I noticed that the sound of the sirens had actually never gone away, and that I could hear them better now from outside. On our walk to school, we stopped by a McDonalds to get some breakfast. We walked up to the big screen, which somehow knew we were standing in front of it.

W H A T I S Y O U R O R D E R ?

“Get me an egg sandwich,” mom told me as she went to go look for someone to talk to. Usually, no one is working at McDonalds, but mom was looking for something to do while I was learning, and she said that this one might have something she could do. I don’t know what though, what would she be able to do for McDonalds? I finished ordering our breakfast, and almost immediately after giving the machine mom’s red card our food slammed down from the elevator next to the screen. We used to have to wait for our food to be made, but now the screen is nice enough to start making your food before you pay, that way you don’t have to wait as long.

Holding our bag in one hand and mom’s red card in the other, I turned around to her yelling out some words I’m not allowed to repeat. McDonalds.con said on their website that they had a human manager in the back every Tuesday for some reason, but maybe they lied? This made me anxious, since I knew mom had been trying to find a place where she could do something for some time now, and I guess it’s important that she finds something. Eating our breakfast, we kept walking to school, where mom let go of my hand and watched me as the automatic doors closed after I went in. I walked into my classroom with the green curtains and sat down at an empty desk with a screen. My friend who sits at the desk next to me leaned forward to smile at me. I like her and all, but I don’t know if I believe her stories. She told me that she used to go to a school where the teacher was a man, which sounds crazy, and that he taught class instead of a screen. I’ve never seen that before, not in my 2 years of going to school. I believe her when she says her old school was different, but it’s hard to imagine something so strange as that. She says some nonsense about how we don’t have human teachers here because they won’t get paid for teaching, and our screens are better because they don’t want money. I don’t know how anyone could not want money. The money we got from the nice people in the fancy clothes already made my life better, and I know that’s why my mom is looking for more. “Good morning”, I said to my friend as I tapped the screen and listened to my teacher.

I woke up this morning to the sound of sirens speeding down the street, it was 8:21 am.
